Phonics for Children:

A Teacher’s Perspective

Phonics for Children: A Teacher’s Perspective is an ECDA-endorsed teacher’s training workshop conducted by EduSparks Academy. This course was created to equip preschool teachers with the relevant phonics knowledge so that they can better teach their children in school.

This 16-hour training covers the basic 44 phonics sounds, segmenting and blending of words, digraphs as well as vowels.

During the session, teachers are encouraged to share their experiences in the classroom and have a better understanding of various methods to help young children gain phonological awareness.

Objective
  • Discuss about Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness and Phonics in Early Childhood Education
  • Familiarise and refresh Pre-School educators with the correct letter sounds (phonemes)
  • Guide Pre-School educators in developing a fun, multi-sensory, cross-curriculum way of gaining phonological awareness and
    learning phonics
  • Discuss strategies that help young children develop phonemic awareness and make use of this ability to speak, listen, read, write
    and spell
  • Share methods to make the classroom conducive for learning early literacy

Teacher’s Training

This introductory training for teachers provides insight to the newest publication
from Cambridge University Press, the Cambridge Reading Adventures.

Synopsis
Teachers will learn about the key features, uses and benefits of these readers in the classroom.

The training will also introduce the literacy system with the various tools available for reading
assessment, to help identify the level of reading proficiency of each child.

Teachers will be able to gain a deeper understanding of how to guide children in their mastery of the English language,
whether as a first or foreign language, through guided reading and supporting activities.

Early Years Teacher’s Training

Conducted by the Official Letterland Trainer in Singapore, Ms Julienne Cheok

Synopsis

This teacher’s course is the first instalment of a series of trainings conducted by Letterland UK.

Participants will be introduced to the basic letter sounds, materials and strategies to teach Letterland in the classroom.

The course is customisable to meet the needs of the teachers, and is suitable for teachers who are using Letterland for the first
time. Through this course, participants will be equipped with the skills to introduce Letterland phonics to children to learn to
read and write!

    For Preschool Educators

    Phonics Teacher’s Training

    Conducted by the Official Letterland Trainer in Singapore, Ms Julienne Cheok

    Synopsis

    This teacher’s course is the second installment to the series of trainings conducted by Letterland UK.

    Participants will be taught further strategies to support the teaching of phonics and further spelling patterns with the use of Letterland’s story
    and pictogram approach. Participants will also understand the relationship between the different letters, and how the
    relationships will affect the spellings and sounds.

    Commonly faced challenges will also be discussed for teachers to clarify any queries and difficulties they have encountered when explaining the stories to the children.

    This course is suitable for teachers who are currently teaching using Letterland to older children, and wish to learn more about how to extend children’s learning to more complex spelling patterns.

    For Parents

    The Introduction to Letterland Phonics for Parents is a workshop that aims to equip parents with the basic knowledge on how to support children’s learning at home. This course is conducted by the Official Letterland Trainer, Ms Julienne Cheok

    Synopsis

    Letterland was created to teach phonics using a story-based approach. The story logic engages students leading to long term retention of concepts. What’s more, Letterland is wonderfully multi-sensory. It activates every learning channel through music, actions, alliteration, movement, song, art, games and role-play. 

    Please take note:

    (a) The Letterland Parent’s Workshop is only for adult participants. Children will not be admitted into the workshop venue.

    (b) Registration is confirmed upon successful payment of workshop fees. No refunds will be given for cancellation or no-show.

    (c) Certificates will be issued upon completion of the sessions. Please ensure that you provide the correct name to be printed on your certificate. No replacements will be given for misspellings.

    (d) This workshop is not eligible for SkillsFuture credits.

    Pen Pal Whizz Teaching Resource
    Implementation Training

    The Pen Pal Whizz Teaching Resource Implementation Training is designed to provide teachers with
    an intensive workshop that demonstrates the usage of the reading pen in a classroom setting.

    Synopsis

    Through this workshop, teachers can observe the lessons conducted with the children, thereby learning the functions of Pen Pal Whizz and getting first-hand experience.

    The workshop will be conducted with age-appropriate stories and resources to scaffold the child’s learning, allowing them to complete the educational activities with fun. Children will be able to discover the uses of the reading pen, while enjoying a storytelling session with activities.

    The review session aims to answer the queries of the teachers, while brainstorming for ideas on how to further incorporate Pen Pal Whizz into the classroom to customize resources, suiting each teacher’s needs and style.

    As an added service, we will assist in setting up a library corner in the school so as to allow the children to have a hands-on experience with Pen Pal Whizz and its compatible books. This will complement the teacher’s classes by providing opportunities for the children to gain familiarity with this learning tool, thereby optimising the use of this reading pen for fun and learning!
